Listen to this message.

Scripture used in today's message:
Ephesians 6:10-20

Isaiah 11:1-5, 52:7, 59:15-17

"I thought at this point I would be better"

The battle is not against flesh and blood (Eph. 6:12); taking up the whole armor of God is not "pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps" but rather depending on God. This is not about self-improvement, but allowing God to work in us.

  • The belt of truth helps us to discern; it frees us from entanglement and allows us to focus on the battle. (Eph. 6:14)
  • The breastplate of righteousness is not mustering up some righteousness of your own, but trusting in Jesus' righteousness. (Eph. 6:14)
  • The shoes of the gospel of peace give readiness; the gospel brings restoration and healing. (Eph. 6:15)
  • The shield of faith to defend against doubt. (Eph 6:16)
  • The helmet of salvation protects our mind by reminding of God's finished work. (Eph 6:17)
  • The sword of the spirit - the Word of God is a tool to for the hand-to-hand combat of everyday life. (Eph 6:17)
  • With all of this God-given provision, pray and be alert, recognizing our helplessness and dependence on God. (Eph 6:18-20)
