Idolatry is just as common today as it was in the ancient world. While our idolatry doesn’t take the form of man-made statues, anything we allow to dominate and control us is an idol. Anything you make a higher priority than God is an idol you worship.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
It was critical that Israel learn the lessons their history was teaching them. It was critical that they learn from their history that God was the reason they were who they were. If it wasn’t for God’s intervention this history would never have happened.
Joshua points out that if the people don’t choose to serve God, they must choose some other god(s). There isn’t an option to ride the fence. He is a perfect, holy, and jealous god that will not share glory with another. We must count the cost before choosing to follow him. We must be “all in” in order to follow God.
