A brief overview of the Bible:
Adam and Eve, created in the image of God, have direct, intimate fellowship with God in the garden. After the fall, people are separated from God and did not have communication with Him. God revealed Himself to one man (Abram) who was able to have intermediate communication with God. After the release of the Jewish from Egypt, God communicates with the masses and they were terrified. God continues to have communication with one man (Moses) who was able to communicate with Him as a friend. The ability of him to communicate with God in this manner was a marvel to them and would stop whatever they were doing when he went to the tabernacle to communicate with God.
As time passes God continues to draw His people closer and closer to Himself. The Tent of Meeting that was outside the camp was eventually replaced with the temple inside the city. Communication was still primarily with one person (the High Priest) though.
When Jesus came to earth, He dwelt among us (tabernacled), and went on our behalf into the Most Holy Place as our mediator, once for all.
