  • Joshua 7:1-25
  • Matthew 5:29-30
  • Hosea 2:14-15

There is only a small step between the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.  After the victory at Jericho, one act of willful disobedience by one person turned the Israelites from God’s chosen people to an enemy of God.  Joshua warned that taking the things devoted to God would make the Israelite camp the same as the other nations devoted to destruction in the promised land.

In a covenant relationship integration and interdependence are vital.  All who are under the covenant are bound together as a unit.  Individual behavior is not viewed in isolation from the group.

After the defeat at Ai, and Joshua’s pleas to the Lord, God shows that he desires to restore the covenant relationship.  The restoration required that severe judgement must come first.

We must not treat sin lightly.  Sin cannot be tolerated in the Christian life.  Sin brings judgement.
