Three types of suffering:

  1. Common suffering-illness
  2. Causal Suffering- Texting and driving
  3. Christian suffering- This is what Peter is talking about in his message

To be an elder of the church, candidates must meet several high standards in order to be able to lead the flock of the church.

Elders exercise oversight and, they shepherd the flock of God.

Elders should willingly shepherd the flock because they love God, and not because they see it as a burden that needs to be filled. It should fill them with joy to lead the people.

Elders should not lead the flock in order to gain something for themselves. Elders are elders serve, not be served.

Elders should not lead for power. Elders should lead, protect, and encourage the people they lead.

Peter is motivating pastors by looking back, and by looking forward to when Jesus is coming.

We who are under the leadership of the elders, need to be subject to the elders of the church as they have been put in a position of leadership by God. Peter directs his message to the younger because they often are the people who have the hardest time with authority. We must also be humble to one another, and to the elders showing that we do need help to become more like Christ.

We all need the counseling ministry of the church.

God’s grace is sufficient for us, and his power is perfect in weakness.
